How to make a heat map overlay (like Crime in Trulia) for Google Maps

I am interested in generating a heat map based on a series of latitude longitude points. I've seen some examples that use the heatmap api , but I'm looking to do something more similar to how trulia handles the crime map . (scroll down to click on crime). Any ideas?

I wonder if you can use Google Fusion Tables for this kind of heatmap presentation. More use cases, examples, and a link to the Fusion Tables API can be found here: Fusion Tables Tour .

This is an experimental service from Google, with which you can upload your own data to spreadsheets, CSV or KML format in Google, and then visualize the data using the Sheets API on a map.

There's a blog post on how they did it: http://www.glenrobertson.co.nz/projects/2013/02/11/trulia-crime-map.html

It looks like they created their custom map overlays using US Census data.
