Using wxOverlay ontop widgets?

I have created a button in this rubber band example. Rubber bands don't appear above the button, I would like the rubber bands to appear above the button.

I think this can currently only be done on OSX where wx.Overlay is the true overlay object. On other platforms, they are simply emulated using wx.ClientDC, which means that a drawing made for overlay can only be sent to the window for which the DC was created.
