Read / write data from COM port in Android

I need to connect an android tablet with some COM port device and send commands to them.

As I understand it, I need a USB COM port. What type of adapter do I need? Some requirements? When I connect a device via a USB to COM port adapter, how should I work with it? Maybe some examples?
