SQL Server 2012 Backward Compatibility for Backups from 2008

I have several clients running SQL Server 2008 and what I have on my server. I use backup files to send databases between clients and in my office.

I read that when creating a backup from SQL Server 2012, there is no way to restore it to a 2008 instance. I assumed the compatibility layer would take care of this problem, but it doesn't. Therefore I am at a loss with how to update. Apart from updating all my clients at once, which is not possible, I don't think there was no clean way to do this.

I need to send a database to a client and also get a database from a client. This is my first version upgrade on SQL Server, so I'm new to this issue. Any ideas on how to proceed?

You can upgrade the database one way (from SQL Server 2008 (or 2008 R2) to SQL Server 2012 and arrange the upgrade to align in that direction.

You can also keep multiple versions of the server during the upgrade.
