Google App Engine - Federated ID (OpenID) cannot work in SSL

Documentation for federated Google App Engine identifiers states :

WARNING: As of this writing, OpenID is not supported if your application is running in secure mode using HTTPS.

I'm just checking if that's the case. The bug seems to be related to Issue 3586 which remains unresolved.

There is a similar question, but it hasn't been updated in two years: Secure remote_api in an OpenID app .

If I understand correctly, these issues mean that you cannot use OpenID with Google App Engine if your application requires SSL. Do I understand correctly? Are there any workarounds (like Janrain RPX )?
