IOS Provisioning Portal: How to Generate an Enterprise Distribution Certificate using Xcode?

For an enterprise account, is the recommended way to create a distribution certificate? If I look at the distribution tab in the iOS Provisioning Portal, I see this disclaimer at the top:

Important: Xcode is the preferred method to request and automatically install this certificate. Please read the iOS Working Papers Guide before continuing .

I don't see anything in this tutorial that addresses enterprise distribution or how Xcode will generate and submit CSRs for you.

I can create and submit the CSR manually, but if Xcode now handles things like this, I would rather do it this way.

Xcode will do this automatically when you create a new provisioning profile if a valid certificate does not already exist.

If you go into XCode Organizer, you should see a New button at the bottom of the window (next to Import and Export).

When you select Create, you will be prompted with your developer account details - if you do not have existing certificates installed on your machine, Xcode will ask if you should request new ones. The process is the same for distribution certificates, however the account you use to log in through Xcode must be the team distributor.

This is all very good and good, but according to Apple's documentation:

Xcode does not load resource allocation profiles. You have to download resource allocation profiles through your web browser and drag and drop them onto the Xcode icon in the Dock.

So, while it is quite useful for development, it is not very useful for distribution: you can request certificates in Xcode, but you still have to go to the provisioning portal to download profiles!

But in the provisioning profile: Distribution tab: Apple says: Xcode is the preferred method to request and automatically install this certificate.

So this should work for distribution as well.
