How secure is 256-bit encryption used in banking transactions

Most banks use 128-bit or 256-bit encryption. What does it mean? Does this mean the keys used in ssl are 128 bits long or what?

Yes, 128 bits and 256 bits are the size of the encryption keys.

Note that this doesn't really tell how secure the underlying encryption algorithm is, as some algorithms (like MD5) have vulnerabilities that make them easier to decrypt than what the bit count indicates (see http://www.win .tue.nl / hashclash / rogue-ca / ).
