VarStringToOleStr in _vararrayput. What for?

Why in the _vararrayput procedure the ones Variants call the VarStringToOleStr procedure. This method is called when assigning a variable of type Variant to an element of a variant array. The point is that in the Delphi <= string style used for blob. And this approach is used in ODAC components.
