Setting a nibble of a 32-bit integer to a specific value

I am stuck on how to replace a 4 bit value with a specific position of the original 32 bit integer. All help is greatly appreciated!

    return num & ~(0xF << (which * 4)) | (nibble << (which * 4));
}

      

Here:



  • & ~(0xF << (which * 4))

    masks the original nibble value;
  • | (nibble << (which * 4))

    sets it to a new value.
