Rename a file name without highlighting on Mac

When I press the return button to automatically rename the file name, the entire file name is selected (highlighted), including the extension. This happens in several types of files, including .SRT. This will not happen on most file types. These are the most well-known file types such as JPG and TXT. I tried to configure the default app for this file type, but that doesn't fix the problem. I still get the full filename (including extension) highlighted when I hit return (to rename the filename).

Any ideas?

Your system does not recognize .srt as a valid extension. You need to install an application that will "tell" the operating system about this extension.

The app that did it for me was VLC
