Android deprecated method warning regarding PreferenceActivity

When I try to follow the Android developers guide and tutorials to create a Settings action using Settings, I get warnings like:

"The addPreferencesFromResource (int) method from the PreferenceActivity is deprecated"

for both of these lines in the code:

getPreferenceManager().setSharedPreferencesName(PREFS_NAME);
addPreferencesFromResource(R.xml.default_values);

      

I know these are just warnings, but I was wondering if they would cause any problems now or in the future when I launch the application I am developing.

As the method is deprecated, it is recommended that you do not use it in your code, as it is quite possible that it could be removed in future versions of Android. However, I have yet to find a deprecated method that has actually been removed from Android.



There is no alternative method in the method description because the preferred approach (from API level 11) is to instantiate PreferenceFragment objects to load your preferences from a resource file. See sample code here: PreferenceActivity

Raghav Court is correct. But if you need the PreferenceFragment badly (I need the tab) you can use that. But in the future it can slow down, so it is better to use it only for the old api. This is a slightly modified PreferenceFragment I made with library support and reflection.

If you encounter a method abandonment warning like this:

addPreferencesFromResource(R.xml.default_values);

      

You have to use PreferenceFragment because API 11 and up requires such a method.
