Java to send email via gmail
Hi all i just tried to get java code to send email to user in java via gmail, here is what i have:
@ManagedBean
@ViewScoped
public class email {
// Set up the SMTP server.
java.util.Properties props = new java.util.Properties();
public void mail() {
System.out.println("Called mail");
props.put(
"mail.smtp.gmail", "smtp.gmail.com");
props.put("mail.smtp.port", "587");
Session session = Session.getDefaultInstance(props, null);
// Construct the message
String to = "cam01342@myport.ac.uk";
String from = "richard.dennis@port.ac.uk";
String subject = "Hello";
Message msg = new MimeMessage(session);
try {
System.out.println("Setting up the email");
msg.setFrom(new InternetAddress(from));
msg.setRecipient(Message.RecipientType.TO, new InternetAddress(to));
System.out.println("here");
msg.setSubject("Print Job");
msg.setText("Hi,\n\nHow are you?");
Transport.send(msg);
System.out.println("Sending message"); //does not get to this part
} catch (MessagingException e) {
// Error.
}
}
}
it has no startup errors etc., I don't get the send message in the console and it's only Transport.send (msg), where does it get stuck in what I did wrong? are all settings available for gmail?
edit:
@ManagedBean
@ViewScoped
public class email {
// Set up the SMTP server.
java.util.Properties props = new java.util.Properties();
public void mail() {
System.out.println("Called mail");
String host = "smtp.gmail.com";
String from = "------------";
String pass = "----";
props.put("mail.smtp.starttls.enable", "true"); // added this line
props.put("mail.smtp.host", host);
props.put("mail.smtp.user", from);
props.put("mail.smtp.password", pass);
props.put("mail.smtp.port", "587");
props.put("mail.smtp.auth", "true");
Session session = Session.getDefaultInstance(props, null);
// Construct the message
String to = "--------";
String subject = "Hello";
Message msg = new MimeMessage(session);
try {
System.out.println("Setting up the email");
msg.setFrom(new InternetAddress(from));
msg.setRecipient(Message.RecipientType.TO, new InternetAddress(to));
System.out.println("here");
msg.setSubject("Print Job");
msg.setText("Hi,\n\nHow are you?");
Transport.send(msg);
System.out.println("Sending message"); //does not get to this part
} catch (MessagingException e) {
// Error.
}
}
}
EDIT: Try the example in one of the links provided to me:
@ManagedBean
@ViewScoped
public class email {
// Set up the SMTP server.
public void mail() throws MessagingException {
String host = "smtp.gmail.com";
String from = "------------";
String pass = "------";
Properties props = System.getProperties();
props.put("mail.smtp.starttls.enable", "true"); // added this line
props.put("mail.smtp.host", host);
props.put("mail.smtp.user", from);
props.put("mail.smtp.password", pass);
props.put("mail.smtp.port", "587");
props.put("mail.smtp.auth", "true");
String[] to = {"-----------"}; // added this line
Session session = Session.getDefaultInstance(props, null);
MimeMessage message = new MimeMessage(session);
message.setFrom(new InternetAddress(from));
InternetAddress[] toAddress = new InternetAddress[to.length];
// To get the array of addresses
for (int i = 0; i < to.length; i++) { // changed from a while loop
toAddress[i] = new InternetAddress(to[i]);
}
System.out.println(Message.RecipientType.TO);
for (int i = 0; i < toAddress.length; i++) { // changed from a while loop
message.addRecipient(Message.RecipientType.TO, toAddress[i]);
}
message.setSubject("sending in a group");
message.setText("Welcome to JavaMail");
Transport transport = session.getTransport("smtp");
transport.connect(host, from, pass);
transport.sendMessage(message, message.getAllRecipients());
transport.close();
}
}
and it throws this error:

I think you need to use port 465 and smtps (Not smtp) for transport.
Full working code from open source project:
/**
* Send email using GMail SMTP server.
*
* @param username GMail username
* @param password GMail password
* @param recipientEmail TO recipient
* @param ccEmail CC recipient. Can be empty if there is no CC recipient
* @param title title of the message
* @param message message to be sent
* @throws AddressException if the email address parse failed
* @throws MessagingException if the connection is dead or not in the connected state or if the message is not a MimeMessage
*/
public static void Send(final String username, final String password, String recipientEmail, String ccEmail, String title, String message) throws AddressException, MessagingException {
Security.addProvider(new com.sun.net.ssl.internal.ssl.Provider());
final String SSL_FACTORY = "javax.net.ssl.SSLSocketFactory";
// Get a Properties object
Properties props = System.getProperties();
props.setProperty("mail.smtps.host", "smtp.gmail.com");
props.setProperty("mail.smtp.socketFactory.class", SSL_FACTORY);
props.setProperty("mail.smtp.socketFactory.fallback", "false");
props.setProperty("mail.smtp.port", "465");
props.setProperty("mail.smtp.socketFactory.port", "465");
props.setProperty("mail.smtps.auth", "true");
/*
If set to false, the QUIT command is sent and the connection is immediately closed. If set
to true (the default), causes the transport to wait for the response to the QUIT command.
