What is the relationship between the .override and .convert files that are used to override preferences with gschema?

I notice that .convert files are similar to .override files. Override files with the .gschema.override suffix. I believe gsettings-data-convert or any other utility creates .override files. I look forward to any link that can explain the complete conversion process.
