Elasticity of search similarity of the index model

Can you change the similarity model of the index or do you need to rebuild the index?

This document provides a merge example, http://www.elasticsearch.org/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/current/index-modules-similarity.html

But the documentation doesn't mention if you can change the model on the fly.
