How to make Mail use Mail Drop on attachments less than 20MB

The email recipient I wrote has a maximum message size of 10 MB. I am trying to send an attachment that is 15MB. Mail on Yosemite does not use Mail Drop unless the message is about 20MB or more. The message is returned by the recipient's mail system because the message is 15 MB and it exceeds their maximum 10 MB.

Is there a default way a user can be entered into the Terminal app to force Mail on Yosemite to send my message using Mail Drop?

It would be nice if Mail on Yosemite knows that the email will be bounced and prompts you to resend it using Mail Drop.

Include multiple copies of the same attachment up to 20MB

I have the same problem and I just read at http://www.macrumors.com/2014/10/17/yosemite-markup-and-mail-drop/ that this cannot be done, so I used a little cheat : I put an attachment in the same folder along with a very large "dummy" file to start MailDrop. I know this is not the best way, but it worked for me.

Stages:

  • Take a screenshot of any part of the desktop with cmd + ctrl-shift + 4
  • Open preview
  • Hit cmd + n to insert a new document
  • in Preview: a. Open the toolbar b. Select the resize icon from. Increase the resolution to D. You get a file size above 30MB

  • Click OK, save this file, place it in a folder along with the file you want to send, zip it up and send.

Again, not the best way, but the only one I've found so far.
