Homebrew updates and native app updates

How homebrew / cask updates are updated if the app is automatically updated.

Example: Chrome or Firefox

These two apps update themselves automatically.

But what happens when you run brew update?

Does it detect that it is already up to date, or checks the internal list of apps that it has installed (missed that it is already up to date) and updates the app>
