Where's how to write a remote git helper?

I've searched this thread with every search phrase I can think of and seem to have found everything that could match the search phrase other than the answer to this question. Is there any documentation somewhere on how to write a remote assistant for Git?

There isn't much documentation out there other than:

Documentation/git-remote-testgit.txt

and then two examples:
git-remote-testgit.sh
remote-testsvn.c
