Xcode 6.1.1 cannot load ios simulator
I upgraded Xcore from v5.1 to v6.1.1 on OSX 10.9.5 and now the iOS simulator won't start. It reports the error "Unable to boot device" .
I found other posts like IOS 8 Simulator was unable to load and IOS Simulator - xcode 6.0.1 failed to load , but the solutions in these posts don't work.
I tried:
- reinstall xcode 6.1.1
- change xcode from 6.1 to 5.1 and back
- add / remove simulator
- install the correct command line tools
- reset connection and setup of the simulator
- remove DerivedData li>
All of the above solutions do not solve the problem. There are multiple crash logs when running ios simulator .

The most common cause of this problem is to set DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES to OS X library.
I suggest you disable DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES (probably in /etc/launchd.conf) or otherwise uninstall the product that installed it and then reboot.
OS X Yosemite has a software changer to handle this situation, so if you need a product that installs DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES, I suggest you update OS X Yosemite for your development.
However, now that you have provided the crash log, I can tell you that the problem is most likely a problem on your system. startd_sim aborts because it cannot create a directory in / private / tmp. I suspect you changed the / private / tmp permissions so that something like this fails:
mkdir /private/tmp/com.apple.CoreSimulator.SimDevice.FE1168B2-EE8D-4C69-8AE7-99F5A80F808B.launchd_sim
You should fix the permissions on / private / tmp and prevent them from getting messed up in the future. This will break a lot of other things besides the iOS Simulator.

iOS 8.3, XCode 6.3 I've seen a similar call stack: ~ / Library / Logs / DiagnosticReports / launchd_sim_ <& GT date stamp; _ <yourHostName> .crash
I'm going to emphasize that Jeremy Huddleston Sequoia stated that in some cases the rights are to blame. (like mine)
Bugfix:
sudo diskutil repairproduct / - fix system directory permissions (for example, if / tmp is incorrect).
This worked for me if I didn't have the DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES set of variables. (ie "echo $ DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES" returns empty). I really hit my head about this. I have removed Xcode / rebooted / deleted Simulators / etc as described in several different SO posts.
Root Cause:
The problem came from another application that complained about not having write access to the / tmp folder, so I changed the permissions without knowing the full result of my actions. The diskutil command above fixed and a few more found folders were not installed as they should be. Now my simulator is working and I can continue to debug the UI in Xcode.
