Differences between AZW and MOBI format for Kindle

I'm new to Kindle development and I'm wondering if there are code level differences between the Amazon AZW format and the Mobipocket MOBI format.

As I understand it, AZW is just a version of the Mobipocket format added by DRM, but is that true? If possible, can you provide an answer in terms of specifications or code examples? And is AZW the only way to apply any kind of Mobipocket protection scheme?

The reason I am asking this question is to see if there is any specific reason why I should choose AZW over MOBI.

And one more question: Is AZW a proprietary format or can I use it freely?

Your understanding is correct. AZW - MOBI with DRM. The Amazon Kindle file formats on the Wikipedia page have extensive explanations and links to specifications.

The only reason to collect AZW over MOBI is DRM. However, if you are talking about AZW3, then there are a bunch of other reasons, 2 of the most appealing ones are CSS and HTML5 support - more on this Amazon press feed issue
