How can I change the ATOM editor markup syntax?

I would like to change the atom.io markdown syntax specification for some special purpose editing environment (academic texts), but I cannot identify the language file associated with Github Markdown among the atom.io packages. It looks like every syntax other than Markdown has a corresponding language file, including plain text! I may be looking for the wrong repository. It will be great if you can point me to the correct one.

Have you looked at https://github.com/atom/language-gfm repo? This is the GitHub Flavored Markdown language.

This might be what you are looking for, as you are correct, there seems to be no dedicated Markdown (non-GitHub) support.
