Depth error and baseline

Depth error versus baseline How is depth error related to baseline? In another way, why a short baseline leads to a large depth error and a long baseline leads to a small depth error.

You get depth by measuring the stereo difference, which is inversely proportional to depth. So, if you want to measure things far from your cameras, the difference can be very small. Eventually, it will become too small for your cameras and your measurements will return to infinite depth. An increase in the baseline increases the imbalance, which makes it possible to measure the situation further. At the same time, increasing your baseline limits your ability to measure things nearby.

Basically, a narrow baseline makes your stereo "nearsighted", while a wide baseline makes it "forward-looking."
