Ssh: connection refused on port 22

I installed Openssh-sever

. Started ssh-server

off with the following command:

:~$ sudo service ssh start
ssh start/running, process 20013

      

With the following command, I can see that port 22 is open:

:~$ sudo nmap localhost -p 1-65535

Also, to check if the port is listening, I used the following command with the results:

But when I try to connect to the port from the same computer, I get the following message:

When I try ssh

from another computer on a different network, I get the following message (xx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the external / public IP of the router):

:~ssh bhuwan@xx.xxx.xxx.xxx
ssh: connect to host xx.xxx.xxx.xxx port 22: Connection refused

      

Whereas when trying ssh

from another computer on the same network I can connect. I have port forwarding enabled on my router on port 22 to my local computer IP. I literally started using ubuntu

2 days ago and started working ssh

on the same day. I'm not an expert on this yet, and any simplistic explanation or guidance would be much appreciated. :)

After a long pause, it turned out that the problem was with the modem provided by the ISP. The above configuration should work fine if the modem / router has port forwarding not blocked by the ISP. Since provided by your modem / router, even after I tried port forwarding, port 22 is not open, which you can check here: http://www.canyouseeme.org/
