How do I use my QML interface and only use Java for notifications?

I am trying to implement an application that can receive notifications via GCM. My problem is that when I add Java to the application, QML is no longer loaded. Instead, it loads the Java interface even though I haven't defined it, so I get a blank screen.

The user interface in Java appears if I create it, but I only need the Java backend for notifications and nothing else.

Does anyone have any experience with this?
