Android SlidingTabLayout - First tab Always selected if not clicked

I have successfully implemented Google SlidingTabLayout with custom icons. each icon has 2 versions, selected / unselected.

When my application starts up, the first tab (out of 4) shows the selected state, which is fine.

Then, if I click on any of the remaining 3 tabs, 2/3/4, the new tab is highlighted, however the first tab is still in the selected state. However, as soon as I click on the first tab and then move between any other tabs, my problem is solved. So, is there a way that I can launch the first tab to be clicked automatically when the activity is created?
