Using Spark DataFrame.flatMap in java

I was working with RDD.flatMap function in java. Now trying to figure it out with DataFrames.

They say:

public <R> RDD<R> flatMap(scala.Function1<org.apache.spark.sql.Row,
    scala.collection.TraversableOnce<R>> f, scala.reflect.ClassTag<R> evidence$4)

      

Returns a new RDD by first applying the function to all rows in this DataFrame and then flattening the results.

Specified: flatMap in interface RDDApi

But when I tried it Function1

,, forces me to override many and many unimplemented methods. This is what I get:

It looks strange, but I kept doing evidence$4

like:

ClassTag<Row> evidence$4 = scala.reflect.ClassTag$.MODULE$.apply(Row.class);

      

My intention is to just play flatMap

around with (course on DataFrames, not RDD). So I don't need to change to Row

. May return the input as unchanged.

So I think I only need to make changes to the method apply

.

    @Override
    public TraversableOnce<Row> apply(Row arg0) {
        // TODO Auto-generated method stub
        return null;
    }

      

But then again, how do I get TraversableOnce<Row>

out Row

?

Also, the method I am trying to fix? Or am I missing something?

You should do something like the following:

RDD<Row> res = df.flatMap(new AbstractFunction1<Row, TraversableOnce<Row>>() {
  public TraversableOnce<Row> apply(Row row) {
    return new ListSet<Row>().$plus(row); //Note the updated list is returned from $plus()
  }
}, evidence$4);

      



This will work the same way map

, only with more freedom to change. For example, to filter things out, you can return empty new ListSet<Row>()

when you want to return it, or keep the current behavior. flatMap

very flexible.

(It seems converting from Java collections is not trivial for Scala collections.)
