Is there a way to translate text in markdown format?

I am working on a project with a significant amount of rich text that I would like to make available in different languages.

Has anyone developed a process for creating and managing markup content in multiple languages?

Our documentation is currently written in markdown. This documentation is then converted to HTML at build time and displayed in the user interface.

Obviously, we can create a bunch of separate directories for each page, but I was hoping there might be some lessons from others that could make it easier to organize and manage this content.
