In the 8.5 release, WebSphere Application Server unexpectedly acquired two different temporary server environments, called server profiles. The classic pre-8.5 server is called the full profile, and the lightweight dynamic server is the Liberty profile.

What is commonly referred to as WebSphere Application Server is available as a collection of different editions. There are quite a few of them, but the key ones are:

  • WebSphere Application Server (often referred to as the base)
  • WebSphere Application Server for developers
  • Deploying the WebSphere Application Server network
  • WebSphere Application Server for z / OS

They all include full and Liberty profiles that you can choose to install. The programming model is consistent, but they differ in terms of production capabilities.

With the release of 8.5.5.0, a new version has been added. This is called WebSphere Application Server Liberty Core. This edition differs from the others as it only includes the Liberty profile and does not include the complete programming model available in other editions. The Liberty Core version essentially contains all the features in the Java EE Web Profile.

So the difference between the Liberty profile and the Liberty Core profile is that you buy the latter and use the former. When choosing what to buy, you need to know what options the publications have. This is documented in the IBM Knowledge Center .

Anyway, if you are just doing development, you can go to wasdev.net and download the Liberty license for development.
