Get the value of variables from one dataset if it falls within the range defined by two variables in another dataset in R

I have a question about manipulating dates in R. I've been looking around for days but couldn't find any help on the internet. I have a dataset where I have an id and two dates and another dataset with the same id variable, date, and price. For example:

What I would like to do is search for two dates in dataset x and if there is a date in dataset y defined by two dates in dataset x for the same id, to select the price value for that id and date. If it isn't. So basically I want to get the final dataset:

Here's a solution based on an excellent foverlaps

package data.table

## coerce characters to dates ( numeric)

## and a dummy date since foverlaps looks for a start,end columns

foverlaps(x,y,by.x=c("id","date1","date2"))[,

PS: the result is not exactly the same because you have a bug in the expected output.

I would take this in two steps. First, concatenate each df by id (see this link for more details on joins) like this:

df <- merge(x, y, by = "id")

      

You should now have a complete dataset with even more records than you requested. To minimize it according to your criteria, try:

df <- filter(df, date > date1, date < date2)

      



I believe this should work.

Edit: If you really want to use NA values ​​instead of just deleting that data, that makes it a bit hairy. What I would do in this case, instead of a filter step, try this:

df$price[date < date1] <- NA
df$price[date > date2] <- NA
df$date[date < date1] <- NA
df$date[date > date2] <- NA

As @Isaac suggested, merging helps speed things up. The operator %--%

from the lubridate package creates an interval. The operator %within%

checks if the LHS object is in the RHS range.
