Can the commit status message be customized in Travis CI?

Our project performs several checks in Travis CI. When the build fails, it would be great to have an indication on github of what went wrong. If we could say "compile failed" or "tests failed" or "style conflicts" or that would be easier than scanning the build log for details.

As is the case, the only github status is "Travis CI build error". Does travis have any means to customize this message since nothing works in my build?
