Cordova 5.1.1 Splashscreen does not work

I am trying to get the splash screen to work on my Android device (Redmi 1S, Android version 4.4.4 KTU84P). The app works fine on my device, but the popup doesn't appear. Splash images are copied and renamed as "screen.png" to the appropriate "platform \ android \ res \ drawable *" directories. I have not installed the splashscreen plugin for cordova. Below is the content from config.xml in the root of the project.
