Nginx + uwsgi doesn't support Django app

I am following this tutorial: https://uwsgi.readthedocs.org/en/latest/tutorials/Django_and_nginx.html

When I get to this point: https://uwsgi.readthedocs.org/en/latest/tutorials/Django_and_nginx.html#nginx-and-uwsgi-and-test-py things stop working as they should.

http://example.com:8000/ returns nothing and nginx error log is empty. What am I doing wrong?

my ssite_nginx.conf looks like this:
