Codons not working with Git submodules in VS 2013/2015

It seems to me that the Microsoft Git provider is not working flawlessly. I noticed that I am not getting any information about the author and changes to Codelens in some of my solution projects. These projects are git submodules , so I suspect the issue will be centered around that.

Is there some configuration I need to do to get the Microsoft Git Provider to work? Will Codelens work better with another provider (if there is another useful Git provider for VS 2013/2015)?
