Spring security always returns HTTP 403
I have configured a custom Filter
one that grants spring permissions for every url other than /login
:
public class TokenFilter implements Filter {
@Override
public void doFilter(ServletRequest req, ServletResponse res, FilterChain chain) throws IOException, ServletException {
GrantedAuthority authority = new SimpleGrantedAuthority("myAuthority");
UsernamePasswordAuthenticationToken auth = new UsernamePasswordAuthenticationToken(user, token, Arrays.asList(authority));
SecurityContextHolder.getContext().setAuthentication(auth);
}
}
and spring, which protects all requests (but / login
) with this authority:
@Configuration
@EnableWebSecurity
public class SecurityConfiguration extends WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter {
@Override
protected void configure(HttpSecurity http) throws Exception {
http
.csrf().disable()
.authorizeRequests()
.antMatchers("/login").permitAll()
.anyRequest().hasAuthority("myAuthority");
}
}
But every request except /login
gets HTTP 403
Forbidden.
I debugged and made sure that the code from the filter actually ran.
What could be the problem?
EDIT - when installing spring security logs in debug, I get the following stack trace:
2015-07-31 14:52:42 [http-nio-8002-exec-2] DEBUG o.s.s.w.a.ExceptionTranslationFilter - Access is denied (user is anonymous); redirecting to authentication entry point

I have the same problem, every request is blocked with a 403 error except for the [/] request. After a lot of crazy time, I found the root cause, ie [csrf].
Then my security config looks like this:
@Override
protected void configure(HttpSecurity http) throws Exception {
http.authorizeRequests().antMatchers("/delete/**").authenticated().and().httpBasic().and().csrf().disable();
}
This configuration states that: only [delete / **] is allowed.
And I mark the [delete] action like this:
@PreAuthorize("hasRole('ROLE_ADMIN')")
void delete(String id);
Hope to help someone.

As the other 403 have said, the user is logged in but is not allowed to view the resource; I would check the following:
- Your control has the correct role permission
@Secured( {"ROLE_myAuthority"} )
- In fact, you have provided the correct permission
new SimpleGrantedAuthority("ROLE_myAuthority");
- Valid granted credentials from UsernamePasswordAuthenticationToken object
-
The filter is correctly entered correctly
Authentication auth = new UsernamePasswordAuthenticationToken(username, authentication.getCredentials(), authorities); Collection<? extends GrantedAuthority> auths = auth.getAuthorities();` Iterator authsIterator = auths.iterator(); while (authsIterator.hasNext()) { SimpleGrantedAuthority sga = (SimpleGrantedAuthority) authsIterator.next(); sga.getAuthority(); // ... }

Getting 403 instead of 401 usually means that you are logged in, but you are not allowed (through permissions) to see the resource.
Debug and validate that the user you are logging in with has this authority (I know your code is installing it, but you might be installing something else wrong).

UsernamePasswordAuthenticationToken
expands AbstractAuthenticationToken
, AbstractAuthenticationToken
implements Authentication
.
Spring Security calls a method Authentication's
isAuthenticated()
to check if it needs to be passed .
Therefore, you must call the setAuthenticated
instance UsernamePasswordAuthenticationToken
and set the argument true
.
Like this:
public class TokenFilter implements Filter {
@Override
public void doFilter(ServletRequest req, ServletResponse res, FilterChain chain) throws IOException, ServletException {
GrantedAuthority authority = new SimpleGrantedAuthority("myAuthority");
UsernamePasswordAuthenticationToken auth = new UsernamePasswordAuthenticationToken(user, token, Arrays.asList(authority));
auth.setAuthenticated(true);
SecurityContextHolder.getContext().setAuthentication(auth);
}
}

Quite an old question, but in case anyone stumbles upon this post, the app had the same problem and turned out to be the problem @ControllerAdvice
.
Basically, the setup was like this:
@ControllerAdvice
class MainController {
@PreAuthorize("...")
class AdminController extends MainController {
And for a strange reason, any controller extending from MainController
would be called @PreAuthorize
from the AdminController
class, even if there was no relationship between that controller and the latter.
In my case it was easy to fix as the removal @ControllerAdvice
was enough, but if you need @ControllerAdvice
you can move the annotation to a class that is never used as a superclass.
