Cross building binutils 2.25.1 for iOS8.4 (arm64-apple-darwin14.0.0)

EDIT. 2015-30-10. I've tried this:

The setup went fine but make

caused this:

BFD does not support target aarch64-apple-darwin

      


Initial question.

I am trying to cross-build binutils 2.25.1 for iOS (8.4) 64 bit target. I put the binutils-2.25.1 folder in the target and the config.guess script which gave me arm64-apple-darwin14.0.0. On my host (x86_64-apple-darwin14.4.0), I created a build folder inside binutils-2.25.1 and ran there:

CCFLAGS="--arch arm64" LDFLAGS="--arch arm64" ../configure --prefix=/usr/local/lvm-cross/ --host=arm-apple-darwin

      

which gave me this:

My question is this: how can I create binutils for this 64 bit purpose?

TL; DR: I guess you'll probably never see iOS targeting binutils

.

  • Apple has never made the Mach-O specs open on iOS.
  • It is unlikely that you can get the code containing libbfd

    in the App Store (since it is explicitly stated that the GNU GPL is fundamentally incompatible with the App Store regulation, especially in the VLC for iOS disputes).
  • It is unlikely that you can get code compiled with anything other than the Apple version clang

    on the App Store (explicitly prohibited by the App Store Review Guidelines).
  • Even if targeting OS X is binutils

    not capable of actually linking and building code.


If you are targeting on iOS, you have to use Apple tooling provided by Apple, or create your own equivalent of the original Apple code released ( ld

, clang

and LLVM - this project open source, and the basic iOS-library can be copied to the Mac, although for your personal use).
