Older versions of spaCy throw "KeyError: 'package" error when trying to install a model
I am using spaCy 1.6.0 on Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS x64 with python3.5. To install the spaCy English model, I tried to run:

I have the same problem with spaCy 1.5.0. The issue is missing with spacy-1.7.2.

TL; DR
This is because the package is sputnik
deprecated since spacy> 1.5.
Your best bet is to update your Spacy to the latest. Or at least up to 1.7 =)
Otherwise, you can try:
pip3 install https://github.com/explosion/spaCy/releases/download/v1.6.0/en-1.1.0.tar.gz
But note that this can mess up your python environment if you have new spacy models already installed. Don't forget to use a virtual environment, especially. in libraries with reverse version!
Also, it depends if Spacy 1.6 can be installed correctly = (
