How to find which polygon belongs to a point via sf
I have an object sf
that contains polygon information (parcels) for a metro area obtained from a file .shp
. For a given lat / lon pair, I want to determine which parcel it belongs to. I think I can use it sf::st_contains()
, but I'm having trouble getting the lat / lon in the correct format.

on lon / lat then it may work with other functions sf

It can be "vectorized". Here's an example:

Turn ^^ into a simple object of objects:

If you have data.frame coordinates ( mydf
), convert them to sf object and then intersect with map
sf polygons:
mydf_sf <- sf::st_as_sf(mydf, coords=c("lon","lat"), crs=4326) int <- sf::st_intersects(mydf_sf , map) mydf$country <- map$country_name[unlist(int)]
