ClassNotFoundException when using ServiceLoader in GlassFish4 Java EE application

In a Java EE application, I am trying to load a service using the Java ServiceLoader . The .jar file I am trying to load is working in a Java SE test application, so I assume this is correct. However, below code doesn't work itr.next

An exception thrown in a ClassNotFoundException complaining about the inability to find WorkflowStepSPI

what explicitly exists (otherwise the code will not compile). In another test, I have confirmed what Class.forName

this class returns.

I tried to create my own URLClassLoader instance as suggested here and load the class directly as suggested here but to no avail.

Any ideas?

Typically, a NoClassDefError

(as opposed to ClassNotFoundException

) occurs when a statically compiled class is not available at runtime ( ClassNotFoundException

happens when you are trying to get a class by reflection that simply does not exist, for example using Class.forName()

).

It so happened that when you compiled your code, the class was present on the classpath. However, for various reasons (which cannot be determined without looking at your configuration), the class is not available on the server. Possible reasons for this:



  • this is part of another project that you cross-compiled your project with (generated .class files) and the other project is not included in the WAR (for example, because it had a different output directory whose contents were not copied to WEB-INF/classes

    )
  • it was included in a library that for some reason was not shipped with the WAR
  • your WAR is invalid and does not contain proper structure (class files must go to WEB-INF/classes

    , libraries must go to WEB-INF/lib

    )
  • you are running the server on a different java distribution than the one you compiled with the code (obviously not, because of the class package, but just wanted to point it out for completeness)

It is generally bad practice to use application-specific WAR applications that must be bundled together with the server (in some server-specific folders). Also, it generates subtle bugs due to some class separation issues in application servers. Instead, your WAR should contain the required jars packed inside.

Assuming @ piotr-wilkin is a great practice answer, here is the status I had and how I resolved it.

starting point

To save time (ironic!), I used the .war file for the web application as a dependency for the SPI implementation project. This allowed me to use classes from the main project when implementing the SPI. But apparently it confused the Glassfish classloader (as pointed out in the question, the Java SE classloader was fine).



Fix

  • I created a new .jar file with an interface that SPI should implement. This jar file was added as a dependency on both the web application and the SPI implementation project.
  • Packaged .jar SPI as usual ( META-INF/services/.....

    ).
  • Added as .jar SPI implementation AND .jar interface to domain folder lib

  • Glass fish restart

Now I realize that I have two copies of the interface that I am not too happy about. But since it is just an interface and does not contain any state in any static fields, I think this is a more aesthetic issue.
