How to use gmail attachment preview for Chrome extension

Building a javascript browser plugin for Chrome that requires the ability to select an attachment from a list and open the file in the Gmail attachment preview (view a large document against a dark background that gives users options to download, share to disk, etc.). Is there a way to access view Gmail attachments through the Gmail API or gmail.js?
