Code works in JavaSE but crashes in Wildfly with NullPointerException
This mistake is so mysterious that I even struggle with direction.
I am creating graphs with gephi-toolkit (0.9.1), wrote a javaSE application, tested it, etc.
When copying this code into my EJB (tried all three types), the code triggers the creation
java.lang.RuntimeException: java.lang.NullPointerException
when exporting graphics to SVG (and PNG as well).
I am explicitly checking my objects - they are not null. So something deep inside the gephi-toolkit is compatible with JavaSE, not JavaEE.
Any hints or recommendations for finding and fixing the problem?
I tried to export file ( File.createTempFile()
) then to stream - StringWriter
and OutputStream
. All three failed.

Executive summary : the code works on the desktop but doesn't work on the server because the server is in bezel-less mode and the code uses some functionality (here getBBox()
) in Batik that a GUI is required .
The main difference between your code running in a simple Java SE program and the same code running in a server-side environment is that the latter is most likely headless.
Gephi delegates to Batik to generate SVG , and in turn Batik uses java.awt
for some rendering details, and the rendering (most likely) required to compute the bounding box ( getBBox()
) is unfortunately relied on by gephi.
Older versions of Batik were used to crash in headless environments . This basically works now. See this example in the Batik source code:

But when trying to compute the bounding rectangle, it is still bounded.
So, one suggestion is worth trying if possible (depending on the situation it can be very simple or very difficult): start your server in a headless environment .
Wildfly (and most servers) works with-Djava.awt.headless=true
the command line by default . This can be changed by editing standalone.conf
.
To do this, you need a display. For example on Linux, use a valid one for it $DISPLAY
which will point to a virtual display like a VNC server, or better with a Virtual Framebuffer which is a "fake" X server (avoids X-windows on the server, CentOS Package xorg-x11-server-xvfb
, Debian - xvfb
).
It might not be a satisfactory production solution, but if it works, it would be at least a good clue to help determine where to look next: how to get a getBBox()
job in a headless environment, or working with gephi unnecessarily getBBox()
.
