Discrete animation transitions from one keyframe to the next without any interpolation.

Think of it the way you usually think of animation - one image to another. Interpolation between them is filling in the space between the main images (in the case of computer graphics, they are found from formulas).

In traditional hand-drawn animation, the main artist will create keyframes and the assistant will paint inbetweens.

In this way, discrete animation is like a hand-drawn animation done without helpers.
