Can't enable multiple processors on VirtualBox

I would like to use more than one processor to run 32bit Ubuntu 14.04 in VirtualBox, but when I stop the Machine and go to settings -> system -> processor, the processor (s) slider becomes grayed out as you can see in the screenshot
How can I enable this function?

Host OS: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
Guest OS: Ubuntu 14.04 32-bit
VirtualBox: version 5.1.22 r115126
Processor: Intel® Core ™ TM i7-3770 @ 3.30GHz (8 processors), ~ 3, 4 GHz

PS: My problem in the first place is that the Ubuntu VM is very slow and I would like to improve the performance, so any suggestions on this would be welcome as well.

To increase performance, you need to increase the RAM and use more than one processor, you need to enable "virtualization technology" in the BIOS. Go to BIOS settings and look for "Virtualization Technology" under System Preferences or similar. It is either Intel-Vi-D or Intel-Vi with an AMD processor, whose name then looks like AMD-V.

If you still have an issue with your VirtualBox preventing you from using multiple processors, you will most likely have to check if Hyper-V is installed under Turn Windows features on or off. Which you may need to disable to use multiple processor cores.

Some computers may still not be able to virtualize using multiple cores. These can be older models of computers or more specific laptops. In some cases, you may need to check if a new BIOS version is available for your computer.

Please make sure you disable Hyper-V. Go to Control Panel> Turn Windows features on or off> Uncheck Hyper-V> Restart your computer

I just needed to forget about the saved state by right clicking on the virtual device.

My problem is slightly different, but fits the question, I cannot get the guest to use more than one processor.

The slider is not gray, I can set it to 1..4 (this is a dual core host).

But by setting it to 2 and booting the Windows guest, it only sees one.

I have also tried every possible value for the slider, guest windows always see one, not more.

If on guest windows I type set

on cosole I ALWAYS get a line, regardless of the possition on the slider:NUMBER_OF_PROCESSORS=1

I cannot enable multiple CPUs on this guest's VirtualBOX.

The weird thing is that if I put an ISO of the Linux LiveCD distribution on this guest virtual CD, it can see all the processors I have installed on the slider ... it's just the Windows guest, the one that the slider ignores. .. I am going crazy ... and out of ideas.

The problem comes from the fact that when installing Windows, it was configured with only one processor, so it was installed without multiprocessing and it had no way of seeing more than one other than reinstalling Windows, but this time with two or more on slider, so it is installed in SMP mode.

So, for those who have problems:

  • I cannot use more than one processor on a Windows guest
  • I can move the slider

The answer is not collected in the BIOS, the answer is:

  • Please set these slider windows to 2 or more, not just 1.

I remember I had a similar problem with an old WindowsXP guest, at the time I tried a patch to change windows to SMP mode, then reboot, but it was so unstable that I decided to reinstall it directly from 2 to the slider.

  • Open the virtual box.

  • Click the name of the virtual machine where you want to make your CPU available, and then click the Settings button at the top of the window.

  • Click the System heading on the left side of the Preferences window.

  • Click the Processor tab at the top of the window.

  • Drag the slider next to Processor (s) on the right until the value matches the number of processors or processor cores installed on your computer.

  • Drag the slider next to Execution to the right until the value is 100. This allows VirtualBox to use all your CPU resources.

  • Click OK, then double-click the virtual machine to turn it on.

Please stop and shutdown your virtual computer and then drag it.
