Log4net .... separate log files

I'm going to write out a separate log for each time I execute a specific process in my WCF service. I have a standard log for an entire application already using log4net. Should I just add the process-specific app and filter and then remove it? This process is related to the processing of the uploaded file. Any other ideas ???

Ok, how about creating a custom ILog interface implementation that also implements IDisposable - you add the app when you create it and remove it when it's located ...

You can do this fairly easily, but it means binding yourself to specific implementation, not interfaces. For example:

log4net.ILog log = log4net.LogManager.GetLogger(loggerName);
log4net.Repository.Hierarchy.Logger logImpl = log.Logger as log4net.Repository.Hierarchy.Logger;
if (logImpl != null)
    logImpl.AddAppender(uploadLogAppender);
else {
    // unexpected logger type - handle this case somehow
}
ProcessUpload(); // does logging
if (logImpl != null)
    logImpl.RemoveAppender(uploadLogAppender);

      

Since the application is only present at runtime ProcessUpload

, this should give you the effect you want. uploadLogAppender

is just an instance FileAppender

with the filename you specified, for example based on download.
