Is there something like a translation database for strings?

I am looking for a database with translations, so I can only use phrases and words translated by machine and not an expensive translator. Is there such a thing as a database of translations with words and frequently used phrases?

If you don't know if you are using such a service?

edit: the database should only be controlled by humans and not some kind of automatic translator, as they tend to be VERY bad.

Check: open-tran.eu . It is a database of translations taken from various open source projects.

I don't think this is enough. If you are going to translate individual words, you need to have an idea of the context in which the word will be used.

For example, consider the English word "string"

Does it mean 1. Line of things 2. Argument 3. Move the boat with oars 4. Indignation 5. Several things in a row ("they won four years in a row")

They probably have very different translations.

So instead, it might be worth keeping a multilingual glossary where you write down the definition of the term and its translation in all the languages you care about, but I think you will need a professional translator to get the translations right, and the "search" should always be manual.

So what do you want is a database book? Why do you need it? You cannot use a conversation book to translate books or software, etc. You also can't use machine translation, even though it might be a useful tool to start with. You should use human translators who know the source and target language well, preferably a bilingual person.

The only thing that is helpful for phrase books is asking for directions; and don't understand the answer ...;)
