Partially missing gridlines in logarithmic scale charts in Excel 2007

I am using Excel 2007 to create a graph of numbers to the scale of a log (specifically the Zimbabwe currency rate) over time. I am using an xy scatterplot and I notice one odd quirk.

The range of y (numbers) values is approximately 10 ^ 30. In every graph I use this data, half of the grid lines are missing. In particular, only the grid lines corresponding to the largest values appear. In fact, regardless of the overall range, only the top ratio of 10 ^ 13 or so has grid lines. It doesn't depend on the database.

Am I doing something wrong? Is this a known bug? I cannot find links to this issue in google or microsoft bug reports.

It's silly to work, but if you are going to present your graph in Powerpoint, you can make the background color of the graph "no fill" and then when you paste it into Powerpoint (I am embedding it as a PDF file). You can draw grid lines and map them to ticks along the y-axis. Set up a "follow through" schedule when you're done drawing so that lines don't appear in front of your data. You can group the whole thing to make sure the lines don't move during the presentation and that they resize correctly if you resize the graph.

I have the same problem, it is definitely a bug. Try the sequence 1, 10, 100, 1e + 12, 1e + 30 versus 0..4 and plot x, y scatter, and obviously the scale grid is messed up even in linear mode, and in log this is the behavior you described.

My workaround was to do the conversion of the values and display them scaled down (by Million factor). This way, the data that the graph handles never exceeds 10e9 (the value I started hitting on issues).

So my suggestion is: graph a Log version of data (and obviously make a legend for it)

I was able to replicate your problem and come up with a pseudo-handling.

The formatting is a little funny, but all the lines are displayed, if you right-click on the axis, select Format Axis. In the Axis Options section, there is a Horizontal Axes setting. Changing it from Automatic to Maximum Axis causes all grid lines to appear.

Fits in the same: does not display the log grid line for the Y-axis below 1e-7. Have a need for a dynamic range from 1e5 to 1e-15. The auto or max mark displays the grid, but places the axis labels in a safe place for display.

My workaround: Used by Open Office to get what I need. Couldn't find a helpful solution in Excel 2010.
