IIS 7 and asp.net applications - newbie question

Just starting a project to go from win 2003 iis6 to win 2008 / IIS7, and after reading the MS documentation as well as various articles, I am a bit confused as it states that there must be one or more applications on the site.

However, I installed a new site listed in my .NET 3.5 directory and it works.

It means that....

A- I see things. A B site doesn't really need one or more applications.

Can anyone explain the above behavior? and also point me to any helpful articles explaining the site, applications, etc ... to me.

The application pool is in classic pipeline mode, but not sure if this is the problem.

Many thanks,

Your rating in the comment is correct - the website itself also acts as an application and does not require an explicit application subfolder.
