Can SQL Server Express be used to efficiently administer a SQL Server Standard / Enterprise installation?

We have multiple installations of MS SQL Server 2005 (both standard and corporate) on our web servers. From time to time I need to manage them from home. I am currently using Remote Desktop to connect to my work machine, but I would rather have SQL Server Management Studio installed on my home computer so that I can work more efficiently. I don't have a free license, so I was wondering ... if I installed MS SQL Server 2005 Express on my home machine, can I use it to efficiently administer higher-level installations on our servers?

See this question:
What is the difference between SQL Server Management Studio and Express Edition?

Also, if you have any issues with Managment Studio Express, there are third party tools that have no problem connecting to SQL Server.

Personally, I noticed a few missing out of the box:

  • Import Export
  • Activity Monitor
  • Work monitor

However, the question you linked can restore most of them for use when connecting to a full sql server.

If you are doing client tools just to install the standard version (i.e. just SSMS) and don't install the database, agent, etc., then I'm sure you don't need another license and won't violate the license agreement. If you want to install the full version, the SQL Server Developer Edition is only $ 49 and comes with everything.

I'm not sure if you can create backup schedules and maintenance plans in Management Studio Express.
