.mobi worth?

Where is .mobi located? Will mobile devices use proprietary browsers that simplify the .com site, or will they use .mobi-based browsers? I have a feeling it will flop ... not sure though.

I feel like smartphone browsers are becoming more and more like desktop browsers, so the whole concept of .mobi is flawed from the start. In addition, many sites can now detect that you are using a downstream browser and automatically redirect you to a less functional version of their website - no special domains are required.

If you're programming a website, would it be easier to just have an internal redirect for mobile browsers than to support a whole other domain? Especially if you can programmatically infer the mobile version from the non-mobile version, on the fly, or whenever you submit content?

.Mobi is well worth it if you don't own or can't afford to buy your perfect .com domain. You can get massive boost to your dollar with mobi domain. Let's say you need a website to promote your application, you can often just register the exact name as a mobi domain for a registration price or a low price if already accepted. Meanwhile, a typically .com will almost certainly be adopted by now, and the current owner might think the domain is worth a ridiculous amount of money. Then, if you absolutely want .com, you end up going for another less optimal .com domain.

I find that accurate and memorable, cheap mobi is better than expensive or imprecise .com.

If you already have your domain, you really don't need .mobi.
