Processes and threads

1a) Are MS Word and MS PowerPoint different processes or threads of the same process?

b) How is the spell check procedure used (common for both, Word and PowerPoint)? I mean the code is copied 2 times for each of the processes in main memory,

  • If these are different processes
  • if they are streams.

The question is not related to Windows.

1a) Different processes, although there might be some program that might try to run them within the same process if you look at it as an O / S in an O / S situation.

1b) The spell check is most likely done on top of the existing input, and the supporting words are in the dictionary along with some basic grammar pre-creating an odd correction here and there. Please note that you will not mention which version of Office you mean as the Mac and PC versions may differ from the versions.

On a Windows computer, you can use Task Manager or Process Explorer to confirm individual processes.
