ASP.NET - Don't have a root node in SiteMap for menu use?

Using SiteMap associated with the menu (first time for both).

I would like the menu to be displayed horizontally with a few basic options, each with minor options.

So something like this:

Right now I only have the root SiteMapNode and then the main / auxiliary parameters.

Not this way:

Do I need to change the SiteMap or menu settings?

I needed to set the "StaticDisplayLevels" property in the menu to 2 from the default of 1. This allows the "root" and "main categories" to be displayed horizontally, rather than all grouped under the "root".
