Can't see win2k8 server by hostname but can see it by IP

On my home network, I have Windows Server 2008 installed and for some reason, Windows Vista workstations on the network can only connect to the server via Remote Desktop via the server IP, not the hostname. Ditto for connecting to an instance of SQL Server 2008 that runs on the server only by IP, not by hostname.

However, I have some shared folders on the same server and workstations can see them just fine using the hostname of the server.

The server / workstations are on the same private network and have the same workgroup name.

Any idea why I can't find the server via the hostname in the situations above?

The file packages are probably processed over NETBIOS, RDP and SQL connections, probably using DNS. Have you added the server to your Vista hosts file ? I am assuming that since they are on a private network, you are not using your own DNS and thus getting them via protocols using IP names, you need to manually push the records to the hosts.
